By the time Liverpool Legend Phil Thompson had hung up his playing boots for the last time, he had fulfilled every boyhood dream imaginable. Such was his playing ability, his defensive partnership with Emlyn Hughes prompted a new style of play at Anfield. He was an integral part of the squad that won both the League and UEFA Cup during the 1973 season and played in very game of the club’s FA Cup run en-route to Wembley in 1974.

Throughout his playing career Thommo, as he affectionately became known, was hugely instrumental in the team’s success and became a natural successor to club captain Emlyn Hughes when he finally left the team. One of his proudest playing moments was to lift the League Cup in Paris in 1981 for the third time.

Other roles at the club saw him serve as reserves manager under Kenny Dalgleish and as assistant manager to Gerard Houlier. He also took charge as temporary caretaker manager while Houlier recovered from a serious heart condition.

Aside from his domestic career, Thommo won a total of 42 caps for England before leaving the pitch to take up a career as a football pundit.

He is a regular member of the Gillette Soccer Saturday punditry team and is in great demand as an after-dinner speaker the length and breadth of the country.
