Paul Merson joined Arsenal Football Club as an apprentice at the age of eighteen and after a brief period on loan to Brentford, made his first team debut with Arsenal in 1986 under manager George Graham. Quickly establishing himself as a right winger, he ultimately played for the team on 425 occasions, scoring a total of 99 goals winning the League Cup, FA Cup and Cup Winners Cup medals in the process along with the title of Young PFA Player of the Year during the 1988/89 season.

During his playing career Paul also enjoyed great success on the domestic front with such teams as Middlesbrough, Aston Villa and Portsmouth as well as enjoying a spell as player/manager with Walsall.

In all, he won a total of 21 caps for his country and holds the distinction of being the only player in England’s World Cup Squad of 1988 not to be playing for a top flight club at the time, highlighting his outstanding ability on the pitch.
