Having been named Sports Broadcaster of the Year on five consecutive occasions by the Sport’s Journalist Association, Jeff Stelling is perhaps best known for his witty and entertaining presentation technique primarily on the Sky Sports programme Gillette Soccer Saturday. Other TV presenting credits include the popular TV quiz Countdown. Jeff is in great demand to host awards ceremonies and sports conferences.
Perhaps best known as presenter of Sky Sports News Gillette Soccer Saturday, Jeff Stelling began his career in the North East town of Hartlepool where he grew up having completed an apprenticeship with the local newspaper.
His first broadcasting job was reporting on Middlesboro FC for Radio Tees, later moving to BBC Radio’s Sport on 2 where he covered the Los Angeles and Seoul Olympic Games.
He later became a newsreader for TVAM, Channel4, Eurosport and British Satellite Broadcasting before moving to Sky TV in 1992 where he covered horse racing, snooker and darts. Jeff went on to be named as sports Broadcaster of the Year by the Sports Journalist’s Association for five successive years.
Jeff became presenter of Sports Saturday, now known as Soccer Saturday in 1994, hosting the six-hour live show incorporating up to the minute sports reports and football discussion with the likes of Phil Thompson, Paul Merson, Charlie Nicholas and Matt Le Tissier. Described in the press as being ‘exceptionally professional’ and ‘perhaps the best sports presenter on British TV’, Jeff displays meticulous attention to detail and an incredible memory attracting huge viewing numbers.
Outside sport, Jeff has also hosted the quiz show Countdown and won the sports edition of The Weakest Link.
Off camera he is a huge supporter of Hartlepool Utd FC and co-owns racehorse Unbelievable Jeff with Chris Kamara. Jeff is an Honorary Freeman of Hartlepool.
