More
Iain Percy was just four years old when he set foot in a sailing boat for the first time. He began his professional career in 1998, representing Great Britain in the Sydney Olympics two years later. It proved to be a memorable games in more ways than one. Not only was it Iain’s first Olympics but he took Gold in the highly technical Finn class.
Four years later at the Athens Olympics, Iain changed classes competing in the double-handed Star class in which he raced alongside Steve Mitchell. Despite missing out on an Olympic medal, the pair teamed up again the following year to take Bronze at the World Championships and Gold in the European Championships. Also in 2005, Iain decided to diversify from Olympic class sailing to take part in the America’s Cup challenger +39 Challenge, taking on the role of helmsman.
Early preparations for the Beijing Olympics back in the Star class went well with new crew member Andrew Simpson, however, disaster was to strike in the form of a series of poor results including a 52nd place finish in the Star World Championships. Despite this, the duo’s never-say-die attitude saw them fight back to reach the start line at the Olympic Regatta. Following a disappointing start, Iain and Andy battled through with a phenomenal performance to come from behind and take the Gold making Iain a Double Gold Champion and the most successful Star Class sailor of all time.
More success came in 2011 racing for Team Origin, the British backed challenger in the America’s Cup with a World Match Racing title and a Silver medal again with Andy Simpson at the London Olympics.
Following his Olympic success, Iain took on the role of Team Manager at Artemis Racing focussing on America’s Cup glory
As a motivational and after dinner speaker, Iain draws on his wealth of experience to inform, inspire, motivate and entertain.
