Former British track cyclist Sir Chris Hoy has been heralded as the greatest Olympian of all time, being the first Briton to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Games.

His interest in cycling began as a child when he raced BMX bikes until he was 14 years old. Indeed he became Scottish Champion and was ranked 2nd in Britain and 9th in the world.

A keen athlete, Chris competed in a number of other sports as a youngster including rugby and rowing, the latter seeing him win a silver medal in the coxless pairs, rowing for his native Scotland at the junior level British Championships.

By the time Hoy reached senior level, his attention was very firmly focused on track sprint cycling. Having become a member of the Great Britain squad in the early 90’s, he won his first world medal, a silver in 1999.

In 2004, silver turned to gold at the Athens Olympic Games in the kilo event. By the time Hoy reached Beijing in 2000, the event no longer existed so he turned his attention to the Keirin, Sprint and Team Sprint events, taking Gold in all three. He added a further two gold medals to his Olympic haul in London 2012 making his overall total six gold and one silver.

Having now retired from the track, Sir Chris has become well known for his broadcasting skills, works to promote his own range of bikes and cycling awareness and is developing a new career in motorsport.

Sir Chris holds a BSc Honours Degree in Applied Sports Science, has received two Honorary Doctorates, was made Sports Personality of the Year in 2008 and has twice been Honoured by The Queen.
